Uneven Lies

Ball above stance

When a ball rests above your feet, you are forced to swing flater, more around your body, causing your ball to fly to the left of the target usually with a right to left spin. When it is above your feet, the tendency is to pull or to hook the ball, and to stop this there are several modifications you can make.

All good swings depend on balance, so the first thing is to neutralize the tendency to be pulled down the hill. Flex your knees into the hill and bring your weight forward toward the balls of your feet and leave it there as you swing.

Take one more club and choke down so that you can stand closer to the ball. Move the ball back in your stance because you will reach the bottom of your swing arc sooner when the ball is above your feet. The shoulders and the clubface are aiming to the right of the target. Your swing takes now an in-to-out path that stops the tendency for the ball to start left.

Ball below stance

When the ball is below your ffet, your swing is more upright so your club face tends to point to the right of the target at impact, curving your shot from left to right. The upright body position puts the club on its toe and aims the club face to the right. Move the ball ball position forward in your stance. This will make you shoulders pointing left, offsetting the tendency for the ball to start right of your target.

When the ball is below your feet, it is actually farther away from you, so stand closer, with a wider stance and more knee flex to lower yourself to the ball. Because the hill pulls you forward onto your toes when you swing, you need to stay on your heels from start to finish.
